A different sports world…

So as most people know, I am a huge baseball fan, however in the past 6 days I have watched more rugby than any other sport.  I have watched Rugby before as one of my college roommates played at Delaware and my friend and Brooklyn’s own Mike Petri is on the USA National team.

Most of you may not know this but the Rugby World Cup is occurring right now in New Zealand, and the USA beat Russia this week when Mike scored the lone try of the game!  Next up for the Americans is the Wallabies (Australia) this coming Friday and you best be sure this entire country will be watching after they were upset by Ireland last night.

Now I just learned this past week that there are two types of Rugby (and 3 types of cricket, but that’s for another post), Rugby Union and then Rugby League.  Rugby Union is played with 15 players on either side and is much slower with lots of scrums & line-outs – this is what the World Cup follows, while Rugby League has just 13 players on either side and is much faster, with less scrums and more free kicks.

The Western Sydney Giants of the NRL (National Rugby League) have their practice facility within the Blacktown International Sportspark where the Blue Sox are located, therefore I figured I should watch a game to see what it’s all about.  The NRL is currently in their postseason so I caught the Giants game against the New Zealand Warriors (the Kiwi’s).  It was a great game and the Warriors came through with an upset in the last 3 minutes of the game.  It is a pretty interesting game with lots of tackling, scoring and kicking, perhaps it will catch on in the U.S.?

Next up – trying to figure out what the deal is with Aussie Rules Football…i’ve been told it’s not that easy to comprehend, are they underestimating the American?
