The Haka

Many athletes have their own superstitions and routines day in and day out.  A lot have their own celebratory dances or congratulatory handshakes after they score a touchdown or hit a homerun.  However while watching the Rugby World Cup I have come to enjoy watching the All Blacks (New Zealand team) perform their Haka before each match.

According to Wikipedia, the Haka is a traditional Maori war dance from New Zealand. There are thousands of Haka that are performed by various tribes and cultural groups throughout New Zealand. The best known Haka of them all is called “Ka Mate”. It has been performed by countless New Zealand teams both locally and internationally. It is normally performed immediately prior to the event that is to take place: e.g. sports matches, conferences, VIP functions, etc

The NFL has some scary creatures in their repertoire, namely Ray Lewis who can pump up his team with the best of them before a game, however I don’t think he comes close to Piri Weepu as shown here:

And this may be one of my favorite battles, kind of reminds me of Nick Cannon in Drumline:

Imagine this at your next corporate function??
